History

Maestro University was founded in 1994 to serve adult learners through flexible, practical education beyond the traditional classroom - originally established as Andrew Jackson University (AJU).

As higher education evolved, the university evolved with it. It explored early models of distance and online learning, supported by research initiatives and educational foundations, while maintaining a strong focus on accreditation and academic quality. Following an acquisition in 2010, the institution was relaunched and renamed New Charter University in early 2011.

Through periods of growth, relocation, and change, the institution stayed committed to outcomes-focused programs for working adults. It earned and maintained accreditation from the Distance Education Accrediting Commission (DEAC), recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

After an acquisition in 2019, the institution entered its next chapter - and with DEAC approval in June 2020, it adopted the name Bottega University (BU).
In 2025, the institution joined the Maestro Education Group and became Maestro University, building on more than 30 years of accredited distance education focused on flexibility, relevance, and real-world outcomes.

Mission

Our mission is to leverage advances in innovative technologies and educational models to provide high-quality, flexible, and affordable distance education programs so students can attain recognized degrees that advance their careers and improve their lives.
This includes employing:

Outcomes-based education in which course length is measured by demonstrated achievement of learning outcomes through carefully crafted objective and performance assessments.

Technology-assisted learning environments, where students learn at their own pace and according to their personal learning style.

Peer-to-peer learning communities in which students share their knowledge and skills and help each other obtain recognized degrees and credentials.

Pedagogical models in which the faculty serve as mentors and coaches as well as subject matter experts.

Evaluation systems that measure student achievement solely on whether students meet standards that are rigorous, clearly articulated, and recognized.

Affordable tuition models.
